After partying all night, yea, we
romped HARD! What made us want to turn on Netflix to see this one I have no recollection. I mean I wasn't coming in with expectations because I'm not that nostalgic for this franchise. Don't get me wrong... I like the first two well enough but I saw this franchise later in life and didn't grow up with it, so I don't have the attachment to it the way I do with something like Hellraiser, but we did anywaz.
But the fact I'm plumb hungover while doing a review-- I have some memory of it, but it is fleeting at best.
Where to begin? Once again, Axel's back in Beverly Hills, a place that he may as well just move to since he's always doing his job there instead of where he actually should be.
Like most revisits after long absence, this feels more like it's lampooning story ideas from 1 and 2 to make a 4. The third was not quite the charm. Apparently, I'm not the only one who thought so-- I found it strange Netflix made Beverly Hills Cop and Beverly Hills Cop 2 available to stream but not BHC 3 cos they could have had all four films available to stream.
I wanted to luv this I really did. Trying to do this without too many spoilers. The storyline itself was a bit of "been there, done that", but still works. It was great seeing the old gang back. It didn't have the same amount of laughs as the original. Also, If they dropped the family drama and focused on buddy cop it would been great methinks. The daughter parts dragged and the chemistry wasn't there.
Make no mistake, for a legacy sequel, I liked it-- a pure unadulterated feel-good romp, keeping it fresh enough with Jane and Gordon-Levitt. But... this I just never felt like it ever really truly recaptured the magic. It's like one of those five star dinners at a fancy restaurant when you get it to go, then you take it home and a day later try to reheat it. Sure it's the same food, but it's just not the same, something's not quite right.
All in all, it has the nostalgia of an old friend you have not seen in ages to come and visit you! so... if you're a fan of the franchise, grab some popcorn, it's worth a watch.
Ahem, not for nothing, but while we were watching, I couldn't help but wonder if he'll be sticking a banana in the tailpipe again... he did.
