Well written and very easy to follow along — I love that. That said, a complete story, but didn’t quite move me in the way I would have wanted. Would have loved something more to happen here, maybe a brief affair with Dr King, then him taking off with a younger chick. I dunno. I know we were limited by page count, but anyway… Good take, just could have used a little more to thicken the plot.
I see you went with one of the greats. The story paired perfectly with your song choice. I thought it was a nice emotional piece. Glad to see Sallee was at peace with the situation in the end. The fact she liked him but still lived her life was good. When Dr. King said, "...that's my girl. Always there to make my life easier." That had to sting.
This was easy to read in that it was well written. It was hard to read in that it was so sad. I felt so badly for Salee. Your story pulled me in and made me care. Well done.
Many thanks to all who read and commented on this script. To those who labeled it "pure fiction" - nope. As stated below the title, it was "inspired by a true story". I knew these people. Our entire town knew them. They were actually closer to my parents' age, but Dr. King and Sallee (not their real names, obviously) were still a fixture in the medical community and hospital when I was a young nurse starting my career. There was no "seedy affair" between them, just "Sallee's" unfailing loyalty and his undemonstrated feelings for her. Oh, and "Dr. King" was actually married four times, and yes, once to a girl young enough to be his daughter - she was my high school classmate and I knew her well. Everyone always "knew" that "Sallee" had a secret love for him. And to answer someone else's comment that they couldn't believe all this happened in the same places over all that time, I assure you it did. He practiced out of the same office and in the same hospital for 42 years. "Sallee" was with him every moment of that time. "Dr. King" did pass away, and sadly, "Sallee" also died just a short time later. We all agreed....of a broken heart. I have toyed for some time with the idea of telling their story. Choosing to do so in a five page script was obviously an injustice to it. Maybe one day I will flesh out the entire story.
As a post note to this entire thing, there is a reason so many soap operas were based in hospitals. Sadly, they could not begin to encompass all the drama and much of it had to be severely white-washed to be shown on public television. LOL Boy, do I have stories.
Thanks again to everyone for all the reads and comments. They are appreciated more than I can say.
Hugs to all,
Kathy
