There was a thread somewhere where I mentioned how you never know where things might lead. Can't find it now, so...

Anyway, Kevin's been writing screenplays for a long time. He switched to prose and got really good at that type of writing. Then he started reading his prose material on Youtube. Some people started to tune in and after a while he noticed what subjects people seemed to enjoy more than others. Soon, his YT channel started to focus more on true crime. His followers grew, and he was even able to make some money off his channel. Then there was a murder that happened in his neck of the woods, Boston. This is when things really took off. The case grew and so did his podcasts. He teamed up with some other people up there, one crime novelist, and a couple of other people. I don't know all the details...   Soon, they were contacted by NETFLIX!!! They were interested in the case and wanted a show. They asked if they could come up with a trailer or proof of concept or such and they were given less than a month if I remember correctly. They never made it. Moving along and now the case is going to be on Court TV and our buddy Kevin will be on tomorrow and Wednesday at 9am I think. Anyway, it's just strange how our passions can lead us off in unexpected directions. I for one hope that Netflix or some other company will give them a second chance at producing a show.

I remember that thread.

And, I heard (from Dena, I think,) that one of his screenplays made it far with Nicholl).

What, so all those great minds couldn't come up with a concept trailer? I'm guessing there's a bigger story there cause I'm sure he's more than capable.

I wish him all the best with this.

Yes, he was a semi finalist.

If Netflix wants you to make a trailer or such in less than a month, I would think it would be a little hard for most people. It has to look absolutely pro for starters and that's not cheap. If you manage that, your approach still has to appeal to them. If you don't have any previous experience in that area, it doesn't matter that you know how to write. I hope something good comes out of this for him though, he's been working on it for a year or so.

I think it's the podcast, not the YT channel that has the biggest following. I don't know where it it because I haven't been following it. True crime isn't really my thing.

Pia,

I remember when he came on here asking the good writers about contributing to the Podcast if they wanted. He was just starting to put it together then.   That's been a few years I think.  Thanks for letting me know.   I like true crime now and then.

Yellow Cottage Tales comes up a lot in a search for Kevin's name but I'm not on X or TikTok so can't delve deeper. It is true crime from what I gather.

** And just noticed Dena says Kevin is appearing on Court TV tonight. Interesting...

They moved the Tuesday appearance to the evening instead. It's the Karen Read case which also made it onto Good Morning America today.

So I looked into it further and found this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR9y3FfX7Og

Note: you have to slog through about 5 minutes of intro stuff which I didn't understand at all, or you can just cut to where Kevin starts talking.  He also doesn't introduce himself or use any titles, so it was only until the first guest called him Kevin that I figured out he was the host.

You can also look at some of his other YouTube videos here:

Just an update.

This court case is still going on and Kevin is there every day. Tomorrow Netflix is setting up an interview with him in his house for their show Unsolved Mysteries. They're even paying for a location fee!

I'm posting these updates because I think it's interesting to see how one thing can lead to another and if you're open-minded and willing to see where the road might take you, big things can happen.

Gary, you're probably not going to see this, but I'll be in Houston next Saturday.

Haha! You're right - I didn't see it!  But fortunately I did see you this morning!  Was really happy we were able to do that.  Thanks for taking the time to see me before your trip!

Dear Kevin,

I switched from writing novels (all unpublished) to screenplays, having seen the sample clause "The GBP30K fee is payable on the first day of principal photography . . . ."

This doesn't mean that the project will be finished - or reach the cinema. Or that the version I had written would bare any passing resemblance to the one the Director directs, or the Editor cuts together.

My feature SPs were about 28K words. Years ago, novels had to be around 100K words.
My published pals were getting nothing like this in advance and minuscule fees. Although some moved away (having bought Audi sports cars) nobody could afford to give up their day jobs.
