Oh wow, I thought with the budget you had you could’ve hired some pros to off load some of the technical stuff. Running all that on your own while directing is not for the faint of heart. Everyone says you shouldn’t do all the work yourself and they’re correct. I just do it because my films generally cost about $1000 or less. Trust me, I’d love to have the budget to hire people who know what they’re doing.
On the positive side, you get invaluable experience. You know at least a little bit about everyone’s job on set. And you could fill in at any part if need be.
Get some rest. Enjoy the editing process and take your time with it. Very much looking forward to seeing it in the future.
Big Congratulations, Warren! I read the email and had no idea you were so close to finishing filming. And the Nullarbor? Did you need to jump through hoops for permission for that location?
You have my admiration.
Apart from looking forward to when it's all sliced and diced, I'm looking forward to reading all about the behind the scenes.
Whew! You really took on the lot. I'd hazard a guess you might not do all those roles next time? Like I said though, good for you, well done, you should be so proud! And I take it you were happy with what you got in the can?
Thanks, yes our filming dates were locked in even before the Kickstarter started. Some very optimistic thinking
What's the saying... It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission, but to be fair I spoke to the manager twice and emailed the owner once and never got an actual answer, so we just went and did it (that's for the motel we used in the Nullarbor) but for actually just filming in the Nullarbor I honestly didn't look into it. We did have some cops drive past one day and they didn't bat an eyelid, we had the camera, a boom mic, and a huge skrim out and they didn't seem to care.
Lots of behind the scenes drama and shenanigans. It was full on!
I definitely figured out very quickly what I liked and didn't, still trying to process a lot of it but for the most part I think writing, directing and producing is the sweet spot.
The edit is done, it goes for colour correction and colour grading today and then off for mixing and the score.
Initially I was worried we didn't do enough, but we worked our butts off and no one had anything left in the tank. I'm happy considering I've never done anything like this before, regardless I think we have something to be proud of.

Potentially could have, and more than likely should have hired pros, but I didn't for a couple of reasons... I chose to do all the jobs because I wanted to, being the main one, but also if you know anything about the Nullarbor it is a massive stretch of nothing in the middle of nowhere. The place we stayed ran on generator power. I think the logistics and cost of moving, housing and keeping pros happy would have been an absolute nightmare for my first film and also would have been more stressful than it was. I was surrounded by people (4 people haha) who I could just be myself around, I could let the stress and frustration out and not worry what people thought.
If/when I ever do this again, I think directing/producing will be for me and I'll leave the rest to pros. Hopefully I can continue my Kickstarter streak on my next project. And like you said, having that knowledge of all the moving part, even just a little, makes a huge difference.
The edit is done, today it goes for colour correction and grading, then off to the sound mixer for mixing and sound design, then off to the composer for a custom score. Those three jobs are most definitely going to pros who know what they are doing.
What an accomplishment, dude - Can't wait to see this
Thanks, Dave!
Was not an easy feat by any means but I'm starting to see some rewards from the work. Had the first little taste of what the colour grade might look like yesterday and it blew me away.

I got goosebumps just thinking about it for you. So excited to see it!

Thanks! Do you remember which story you were going to adapt?
