Well, you've all survived this long and congratulations goes out to all of you. But, it's time for week 3, otherwise known as "The Trifecta". In this round, you will all be writing three 1-page shorts. In addition to this, each short will be of a different genre. The scripts will be scored on a range of 1-5. If a script isn't entered, you'd get an automatic zero for that script so, at least, enter something. Good luck to you all. Please submit to SimplyScripts.com/OWCWarren vs. MarkItZero

Is there a missing number there?
1 - X page shorts... or do you really mean 1 page?

Is this the full assignment? Do I start writing now? Or, am I about to get a separate email explaining the scripts must be in disappearing ink, written right to left and include 7 characters, all named Jean? |

I think you have to wait for your email because the match ups have to be assigned and then the genre etc. So, I'd hold off till the clock gets announced.

So... the disappearing ink thing. Gotcha.
For some reason, this message felt different. |

Has to be more info I imagine? I love a one pager, not sure I'm creative enough to think of 3 in one sitting. Will be fun but tough. |

Is sounded to me like each pair would be assigned three genres, so watch your PM box. Something like Romanian soap opera, Zoroastrianism faith-based, and a horror trilogy (you still have to fit it on one page). |

My guess (also not submitting) is that the three scripts live independently, and readers scoring them wouldn't be told that those three were related. |

I don't know how they will organize this. They will tally all of the scores on one script vs. all of the scores on the other? How do you solve the issue of a script having more people score it than the other? Last round some pairings were voted on by more people. |

In order to make things really hard on myself, I will be averaging all your scores, using my MP scorecard. Highest average score moves on. That's why you are strongly encouraged to write all three scripts. |

I guess that works...ish. There will be lots of randomness. Scripts with catchy titles will be viewed and voted on more. Scripts with only 7 votes will be averaged vs scripts with 15-20. Makes a little difference. Also some harsh critics think every script is a 1/5. Those people will vote on some and not others. Everyone they didn't vote on will dodge a bullet. |

There is a way to handle that, but Sean is making this hard on himself already. (Basically you calculate the mean and standard deviation of scores by a particular rater, and normalize all of their scores. Then it wouldn't matter if they gave mostly 1s and a 3, or mostly 3s and a 5.) Better to have people honestly evaluate all of the scripts. If the board can do ratings, then each writer just silently gives their own stuff 5s. If not, Sean can add those in at the end or not, it wouldn't make a difference. |

Great idea in a perfect world but I don't think this will happen, I guarantee some great scripts will get really low scores and it will get put down to personal preference. |

All due respect, but this is a writing exercise not an Oscar nomination. Is is the case with all of our challenges we trust each other to act in good faith. If somehow someone doesn't the consequence is unimportant in the grand scheme of things. |

One pagers, three of them for each contestant… well, if that's not the supreme discipline, haha.
No, seriously looking forward what you come up with. I love the shorts short.
I just made a list who's still in because it's hard to overview where and what, searched a while myself.
So as I see it, the quarter-finalists are:

Good luck and have a happy Easter holidays with few but effective writing, shouted from the sideline. |

I have a parameter suggestion for this round.
Since these are one-pagers, they should be just that. One page only. No going over to Page 2, not even a few lines.

Well, I'm not writing but there was a one-page challenge back at MP (another site) and if anyone ever went over a page he would be automatically disqualified. I think it was a fair practice. |

Was wondering myself, so I'm going 3 distinct genres, just to be safe. Punted a pretty good overall concept, too, in the abundance of caution. |

Thanks, mate. I certainly don't mind being stable. Some of my favorite writers got bracketed together - bad draw. In each round there were several scripts that, in a vacuum, were certainly good enough to move on but they happened to be up against an equally strong script. |

Dave, Anthony and Warren I would have bet my money on to be here. You're all stable; don't see it in a negative sense.
James is the lone favorite.
Stumpz and Stevie is wildcard, I hope they cause havoc.
Cardinal and RJP I don't know yet
shouted from the sideline |
Not entirely sure what stable means, but if Dave and Anthony are in that bracket I'll take it. Thanks, Alex. |

Hey hey, stable to me means sovereign, reliable. In other words, you write on a level that is screenwriter all-day level; I must correct; you act as engaged all-day screenwriter --- |

The bigger issue is 3 loglines.
They almost seem pointless for one page. |

Use the logline as exposition to establish the setting, save a precious line or two in your script. |

I don't know if posting three comments in a row is allowed but I'll go for it as a really revolutionary thought occurred to me and I must share it with you.
I think that technically you don't have any parameters this round (except for page limit) because voters wouldn't know if you broke the genre parameter or not and Sean is known to be very tolerant towards any parameter breaking. |

I'm hoping this is monitored somehow as it is one of only 2 parameters. It's a lot easier to write 3 scripts in your genre than having to branch out in to areas you're less comfortable with, that's what makes it interesting. I think one of the scripts should be disqualified if it is the same genre as another. |

I agree with you Warren, but assessing the genre is tricky business (comedy for instance).
And I'm pretty sure Disqualifier Sean is not.

I assumed that Sean/Don would post them as trios, so my three would be all together and make genre differences obvious. I fully expect the usual genre debates to erupt though, they always do |

As pointed out though, if the scripts are posted like that then the genre requirement does become irrelevant as no reader would know if I'd submitted 3 horror scripts... unless Sean wants to read them all first |

Well I imagine everyone will select the correct genre on the submission form, you'd think so at least. Should be relatively easy to tell if they chose two of the same. I could be wrong. |

I always try to tow the line just in case. e.g., I had trilogy idea - three 1 page scripts involving the same characters - moving them through different genres - i.e., Dave and Wife meet - rom/com - Dave and Wife lose baby - drama - Dave and Wife get android son to replace baby - sci-fi. Didn't do it as didn't want to mess with someone thinking - no - it had to be three separate scripts and ergo three different stories. Think it would have been interesting though |

Well, yeah it was close with yours and I'm sorry for you since it was a bold attempt to go there. But feelings does not necessarily mean sentimental feelings, could also be anger or scare or feel intelligent, subtle, even confusing or easy… I just think the worst you can do in whatever kind of expression is evoke nothing, being trivial. This round will be interesting. |

Just reread mine and am second guessing. Maybe I should've written each in reverse time order. Then, for good measure, done a William Burroughs -- that is, cut all three into pieces, mix them up, and reassemble. |

I, too, had a concept that connected the three pages in a unique way. Can't say what that is without outing myself on one of my scripts. I abandoned the idea out of an abundance of caution.
I'll share the idea when the round is over. |

Oh, snap. No pressure. As it sits, at least two of my scripts are set to disappoint. But, you've inspired me (terrified me) into taking another pass to see if I can't find some way... any way... to make them worthy. |

That's multiple compliments from you. I do appreciate it. It calms the angst-filled creative side of me. I'm trying to rewrite Blood Brothers to smooth out a few of the problems. If I can't find someone else to shoot it, I may just do it myself. Haven't tried that before! |

Based on your previous two scripts I think you're a strong competitor for the win. Also, most of the 8 writers that are left are SS regulars and established as good writers. You're a bit of a dark horse (actually let's go with Trojan horse). I had never read any your work before this comp, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for it from now on. Good luck, I look forward to seeing what you put out. |

Following on from my last comment, I'm very happy to be sharing the quarters with some of my favourite writers, Dave, Anthony, and James. Wouldn't be a loss to go out from this point.
Not sure I'd still be here anyway if Steve Miles and Mark Renshaw had entered. Steve's work blows me away every time, he's one of the most consistently brilliant writers here, in my opinion.
And Mark, well he's Mark haha. |

Jeepers, there's a real mutual appreciation society going on here. Don't worry, I'm just jealous. P.S. Ten scripts AC?! And good one Dave, 'try-fecta'. |

We'll, I'm looking for scripts to review on the Blog page so maybe there'll be some good candidates.
Filmmakers are always on the lookout for super-shorts easy to film, minimal cast, one location. |

Feeling's mutual. It is nice to see that WARDD didn't break you after all |

With standard screenplay format, you could get FADE IN, FADE OUT and ten different locations on a one-page script (though nine of then will have only a single line of action, and one could get all chatty with two). |

Well yes, you could do that... You could also have your one page set on the moon with SFX. Bigger budget though, eh? |

I would say that the less description you have to do, the better off you are... unless you have a real story to tell. In my honest opinion, the best short I think I ever wrote was a 1-pager. It forces you to get really creative since you don't have the page room to rely on dialogue. |

Or you could write the story in 3 different genres.
For ex. Mom loses baby. Kills self in a drama setting. Mom loses baby, full blown horror as she kills several hospital staff members.
Mom loses baby, aliens visit her, give her a child that could save or destroy the human race.
3 stories, all the same start, yet totally go in very different directions.

Submitted. Ended up with four scripts. Had to speed-write the last one when I decided my third probably wouldn't count in the genre I needed to clear the parameters. Didn't think ya'll would accept a Hatfield/McCoy script as a Western. Despite the fact that it's WEST Virginia. That should count, right? |

Wait, 10 scripts instead of three? Scripts not good? The site won't let submit? Oh the signs of pre-posting agony!
Have a happy Tri-fecta, all! |

So since there will be a large number of short reads of variable quality, I’d suggest a trick to help calibrate your 1-to-5 scale. Read through a handful of them before giving any ratings (people with scads of spare time could read them all before giving any ratings). Rate the initial sample last.
That will give you a notion of what’s out there, so you don’t end up regretting a 5 when you find something even better... or end up giving everyone a 1 due to unrealistic expectations under these parameters. |

I'm no math major, but since it appears that Sean was good to us readers (by abusing the writers) in giving us 24 total pages to read, I'll probably read them all first before rating them.
I'll probably rate them on a curve too, taking into consideration how hard it is to convey a story on a single page. |

Isiah, I always click on "recent threads" in the top right menu. Also, if you can see "Writers Tournament" under the ticking clock - you can click that one and it will take you to the whole deal. All the tournament thread including the newest entries. It's three threads under the ticking clock. I mean the ticking clock in the top right-hand menu - it's up there and it's not ticking anymore. To the left of the movie banner. Hope you find it. |
